The Florida Chameleon is also known as the Carolina or Green Anole, the red throated or American anole, an arboreal lizard which is found primarily in the south-eastern parts of the USA and some of the Caribbean islands. Although they have they capacity to change colour and can move each eye independently of the other they are not related to true chameleons.
The anole can reach up to 8 to 9 inches in length and its diet is composed mainly of small insects such as crickets, leaf-hoppers , fruit flies and other bugs. The male has a highly ritualistic mating dance and will readily employ its bright-red 'dewlap' or throat flap in pursuit of his intended lady.
As a creature peculiar and indigenous to the south-eastern coast and Florida it was chosen as a symbol of uniqueness; with its limited habitat range it also expresses the DBWF eschewing of aggressive expansion. The Florida chameleon is also very territorial and will fight to defend its claims. This charming fellow, the Floridian mascot has been dubbed as an 'unofficial' spokesman for the Dominion? and may soon be appearing on television commercials selling Cinderella stamps.
